New after school tag rugby programme aims to engage 'extra' skills.
The Engage! Values Programme is kicking off its Engage! Extra Time Eight Week Skill Centre at the Alan Higgs Centre on June 6 until July 25 for five to 11-year-olds.
The brand new sessions will teach participants about rugby’s five core values of teamwork, integrity, enjoyment, respect and discipline, while also developing their educational, sporting and social skills.
The launch of the eight week programme follows a successful first six months of the initial Engage! Values Programme, which saw a mixture of classroom and rugby-based workshops delivered to more than 1,200 year four pupils across 26 schools in the city.
Tom Clift, Programme Manager at Engage!, said:
Interest in rugby is going from strength to strength in our region, particularly with Wasps and Coventry Rugby having strong seasons, and programmes such as ours are helping to capture and nurture this interest at a grassroots level.
We’ve been so pleased with the response and the participation levels that the Engage! Values Programme has had recently within schools that we’ve decided to trial programmes to all primary school ages across Coventry.
The Skills Centre is ideal for introducing children to tag rugby for the first time in a safe environment, grouped with children their own age, where they can learn more about key life values, have fun and make new friends.
It is also the perfect opportunity for those children that have already taken part in the programme to develop their skills further with fundamental rugby movement skills, ball handling and key decision making.
Following the programme, we’re hoping the children will be able to apply the life values they’ve learned to their everyday lives, and who knows, go on to become rugby’s next big star!
The Engage! Extra Time Eight Week Skill Centre will be held every Tuesday with two individual time slots of 4.30pm until 5.30pm and 5.30pm until 6.30pm.
