Free Rugby Activities at Coventry Sports Week
Rugby clubs from across the region will be encouraging more people to get involved in rugby as part of Coventry Sports Week in August.
A fun-filled day of rugby will see rugby clubs from across Coventry and Warwickshire coming together to promote the sport and its core values on Friday, August 11.
The range of free rugby activities will take place at Broadgate Square in Coventry City Centre between 10am and 4pm on the day.
Activities set to take place on the day include touch rugby and tag rugby. Sessions will be led by City based professional and semi-professional rugby clubs.
Coventry Bears, Coventry Rugby Club, Wasps and the Rugby Football Union (RFU), will all be involved on the day, hosting fun games and sharing their skills with mini coaching sessions – the mascots from the teams will also be there to join in the fun with hotly anticipated annual mascot race around midday.
The day will also feature opportunities to join the clubs, including the chance to sign up to be a Coventry Bears Junior or a Wasps Junior member.
There will also be prizes to be won, including tickets to see Coventry Bears and branded merchandise from other rugby clubs there on the day.
Challenges, activities and competitions on the day aim to promote the vales of teamwork, respect, integrity, enjoyment and discipline on the day, while inspiring healthy competition and giving young people a platform to showcase their talents.
Engage! will be coordinating the event and will also be showcasing plans to use the values of rugby to build a better Coventry in the future.
Tom Clift, Programme Manager at Engage!, said:
Working with all partners across the City, we’ve introduced rugby to thousands of school children and young people over the past year, and this provides us with an ideal opportunity to spread further awareness about the benefits of the sport at a time when the City of Rugby project is aiming to make Coventry a rugby world leader at every level by 2023.
Children and adults alike will be able to take part in various rugby drills throughout the morning from Wasps, Coventry Rugby and Coventry Bears, and if it’s anything like last year, it’s set to be a fantastic occasion.
The organisations involved collaborate as part of the Coventry City of Rugby - a scheme in place with the objective of establishing Coventry as a leading city in the sport by the year 2023.
Coventry Sports Week takes place between Tuesday, August 8 and Saturday, August 12. For more information visit: www.coventry.gov.uk/coventrysportsweek.
